How it works
Net = Gross − pre-tax deductions − tax − social security − post-tax deductions
Pre-tax items (retirement, insurance) reduce taxable income before the tax rate is applied; post-tax items come out after.
Example
$80,000 gross, 5% retirement, 22% tax and 7.65% social security ≈ $53,200/yr or ~$4,430/mo take-home.
Frequently asked questions
Pre-tax vs post-tax?+
Pre-tax deductions (401(k)/EPF, pre-tax insurance) lower your taxable income; post-tax deductions (Roth, union dues) come out of net pay.
What's the social security field?+
Use it for payroll deductions that are a flat % of gross — US FICA (~7.65%), UK NI, etc. For India EPF, note it's 12% of BASIC salary (basic is typically 40-50% of gross), so enter roughly 5-6% here.
How do I model an Indian salary (CTC)?+
Enter your gross (not CTC — employer PF and gratuity are part of CTC but never reach your account). Put employee PF in the social field (≈5-6% of gross) and your average income-tax rate — the Income Tax Calculator computes your exact slab rate for either regime.
